Conquer the Heights of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest peak and one of the world's most magnificent mountains, its snow-capped triple peaks rising from equatorial rainforest to alpine moorland and barren glacial summits. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a trekker's paradise.

The mountain is best known for the hikeable third peak, Point Lenana (4,985m) - a challenging but rewarding ascent that culminates in one of Africa's most spectacular sunrises. Its lower slopes support rich montane forest teeming with elephants, buffalo, Sykes' monkeys and a dazzling array of birds, including the sunbird.

Basic Information

Beyond the summit trails, dramatic gorges, waterfalls, giant lobelias and crystal-clear alpine tarns make every step of the mountain an extraordinary adventure.

To stand on the rocky summit of Point Lenana as the equatorial sun splits the horizon is to feel Africa rise beneath your feet - a reward earned through forests, moorland and the silent company of giant lobelias.

The Gorge Tours Safari Guide

The best time to climb Mount Kenya is during the dry seasons from January to February and August to September, when clear skies and dry conditions give the best chance of reaching the summit. The green season brings lush forests and fewer trekkers, though rain and cloud can hinder summit bids.

From the wildlife-rich montane forests and thundering waterfalls to the towering twin peaks and serene alpine tarns, Mount Kenya offers trekkers, climbers and nature lovers an unforgettable journey through one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes.

Sample 3-Day Mount Kenya Itinerary

Drive to Sirimon Gate and begin the trek through montane forest to Old Moses Camp (3,300m). Enjoy views of the forest and its wildlife before an overnight at the camp.

Ascend through the moorland to Shipton's Camp (4,200m), crossing streams and passing giant lobelias. Rest and acclimatize in the afternoon with views of the twin peaks before overnight at Shipton's.

Set out before dawn for the final push to Point Lenana (4,985m) in time for sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Old Moses Camp and transfer back to Nanyuki or Nairobi.

This is a sample itinerary and can be fully customized to suit your dates, budget and interests.
