Explore the Adventure of Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate National Park is a compact but spectacular park in the Rift Valley, named for the dramatic crevices and sheer cliffs that frame its landscape. It is one of the few parks in Kenya where you can walk and cycle freely among the wildlife - a truly immersive experience.

The park is famous for its towering red-rock gorges, including the mesmerizing Njorowa Gorge, and for the steaming geothermal vents and bubbling hot springs (Ol Karia) that reveal the earth's raw power. Hollywood brought it to the big screen in The Lion King, whose Pride Rock was inspired by Hell's Gate's Fischer's Tower.

Basic Information

With buffalo, zebra, giraffe, eland and abundant birdlife all visible from the trails, Hell's Gate offers adventure, geology and wildlife in a single, unforgettable visit.

The Gorge Tours Safari Guide

The best time to visit Hell's Gate is during the dry season from June to October and January to March, when mild weather and clear skies make it ideal for cycling and gorge walks. The green season from April to June brings lush scenery, though trails can be muddy.

Only a short drive from Nairobi and Lake Naivasha, Hell's Gate is the perfect day-trip adventure - combining wildlife, extraordinary geology and a genuine sense of discovery in the heart of the Great Rift Valley.

Sample 2-Day Hell's Gate Itinerary

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive to Hell's Gate National Park. Rent bicycles and cycle into the park past buffalo, zebra and giraffe, then explore the dramatic Njorowa Gorge on a guided walk. Continue to the geothermal hot springs for a relaxing soak before returning to your Naivasha or lakeside accommodation for the evening.

Optional morning rock climbing or an exploration of Fischer's Tower, the volcanic plug that inspired Pride Rock. After a leisurely brunch, transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the early afternoon.
